Yankees improve their pitching needs

The Yankees make a good splash as the trade deadline approaches. They get the man they wanted and relief help all without giving up their top prospects.

RELIEF HELP

The New York Yankees today announced that they have acquired RHP Scott Effross from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for minor leaguer RHP Hayden Wesneski. — New York Yankees (@Yankees) August 1, 2022

The first trade on Monday was for a relief pitcher, Scott Effross, from the Cubs. The Yankees gave the Cubs RHP Hayden Wesneski from their minor league system. Wesneski was the Yankees’ number seven prospect. The Yankee fans saw the first improvement to a bullpen that needed help since Michael King was placed on the IL.

THE MAN THEY WANTED

The New York Yankees today announced that they have acquired RHP Frankie Montas and RHP Lou Trivino from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for LHP JP Sears, INF Cooper Bowman, RHP Luis Medina and LHP Ken Waldichuk. — New York Yankees (@Yankees) August 1, 2022

After the Mariners traded their top prospects for the pitcher, Luis Castillo, the price for Frankie Montas seemed like it would take about the same haul to acquire him. The Yankees tried trading for Montas after the lockout but the A’s had decided to hold onto him. The Yankees gave up numbers five, nine, and 20 prospects. They also acquired relief pitcher, Lou Trivino, in the trade.

WHO WILL MOVE

Prior to tonight’s game, the Yankees made the following roster moves: •Transferred RHP Miguel Castro & RHP Luis Severino to the 60-day IL •Optioned RHP Clarke Schmidt to Triple-A SWB •Signed RHP Carlos Espinal to a Major League contract & selected him to the active roster — New York Yankees (@Yankees) August 1, 2022

With Montas taking a spot on the rotation, the question now is who is moving out. Domingo German is out of options and can’t be sent down without going through waivers. German can be a possible trade piece and it will be interesting to see what the Yankees can get.

In terms of upcoming Yankees roster moves, my understanding is Domingo Germán is out of minor league options and cannot be sent down without passing through waivers. Aaron Boone was vague about when Frankie Montas would be available for his first start as a Yankee. — Lindsey Adler (@lindseyadler) August 2, 2022

Can Jordan  Montgomery be moved for a trade? It’s unlikely but still possible. The Yankees have a tough decision to make and it might be not very clear at first but eventually, it will make sense to fans.

ARE THEY DONE?

Possibly they aren’t done yet. The Yankees still need to find a new home for Joey Gallo and Miguel Andujar, who requested to be traded earlier this year. The Yankees still have their top prospects to use for any big names they really want. Should the Giants decide to be sellers, Carlos Rondon could still be in play for the Yankees as well.

As 6 pm approaches, it will be interesting to see what moves are made and what roster Yankee fans will see during tonight’s game.
