Tuesday tidbits you may have missed

NBA

  1. The Boston Celtics played without big man Al Horford and Mr. Defense Marcus Smart in game 1. Horford is out on NBA Health and Safety Protocols and is expected to miss game 2 as well. Smart is day to day on a mid-foot sprain, MRI was negative. Miami Heat guard Kyle Lowry missed his 3rd straight with a hamstring injury. The 3rd quarter was the deciding factor in this one with Miami out scoring Boston 39-14 and ultimately taking the victory 118-107. Jimmy Butler had a spectacular game, leading the Heat with 41 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists. Jayson Tatum with 29 points and Jaylen Brown with 24 led the Celtics in their losing effort. Game 2 is Thursday.

Pierre-Edouard Bellemare scored the go-ahead goal early in the 3rd period, Nikita Kucherov and Corey Perry each had a goal and an assist, and Ross Colton also scored for the 2-time defending Champion Tampa Bay Lightning as they skated past their in-state rival Florida Panthers 4-1. Andrei Vasilevskiy remained red-hot with 34 saves for Tampa. In the last 3 games he has stopped 94 of 99 shots taken. Game 2 is Thursday night.

  1. Josh Manson scored 8:02 into OT, Darcy Kuemper made 23 saves in his return from an eye injury and the Colorado Avalanche overcame the St. Louis Blues 3-2 on Tuesday night in Game 1 of their 2nd-round series. Valeri Nichushkin and Samuel Girard also scored for the Avalanche. Ryan O’Reilly had a first-period goal and Jordan Kyrou tied it late for St. Louis. Binnington kept the Blues within reach with one save after another. He stopped 51 shots. Game 2 is Thursday.

  1. The Houston Astros put a monstrous beatdown on Boston Red Sox right-hander Nathan Eovaldi during Tuesday’s game. Yordan Alvarez, Kyle Tucker, Jeremy Pena, Michael Brantley, and Yuli Gurriel went over the wall in the 2nd inning off Eovaldi to tie an MLB record for most long balls in a single inning. The Astros won 13-4.

  1. Baltimore Orioles right-hander Matt Harvey has been suspended for 60 games without pay “for participating in the distribution of a prohibited drug of abuse in violation of Major League Baseball’s joint drug prevention and treatment program,” the league announced Tuesday. Harvey’s suspension is retroactive to April 29.

  1. The Tampa Bay Rays will be without 2nd baseman Brandon Lowe for at least 3 weeks as the former All-Star was diagnosed with a stress reaction in his back, the team announced Tuesday. He will be re-evaluated in 3 weeks.
