Saturday Shenanigans You Might Have Missed


NFL


  • The Carolina Panthers and linebacker Shaq Thompson have come to an agreement on the terms to rework a 2 year contract. The 28-year-old led the team in 2022 with a career-high 135 tackles, but was a possibility to be cut due to his $24.5 million hit against the cap with no remaining guaranteed money in his current contract.




  • With trade rumors flying around the NFL about Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Darius Slay, the 32-year-old addressed the subject on his podcast "Big Play Slay" to set the record straight. The 5-time Pro-Bowler saying:

"I just want my fans to know, Slay did not ask to be traded, but this is part of the business. There's no bad blood against neither one of us, me or (general manager) Howie (Roseman). None of that. We all good. Great understanding, just the business part of it. A lot of guys go up for trade, you know, it got a lot of money involved in this situation. It's nothing big. Nothing too serious, man. It's part of the business. "




  • Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill competed in his first track and field event since 2014, wearing a speed suit with his alma mater on it, Coffee High School. On Saturday he ran at the USA Track and Field Masters Indoor Championships in Louisville, Kentucky and won the men's 60 meter race with a time of 6.70 seconds.





NBA


  • Steph Curry showed up big in his 1st game at home since returning from his long injury absence. Curry scored 36 points, 22 of those were in the 4th quarter and overtime to help lift the Golden State Warriors over the East leading Milwaukee Bucks 125-116.




  • The Boston Celtics hit 20 - 3 pointers and had 6 players score in double digits in a winning effort to hold off an attempted comeback by the Atlanta Hawks in the 4th quarter. Boston strengthened their hold on the No. 2 spot in the East beating Atlanta 134-125. Jayson Tatum scored 34 points and had 15 rebounds, while Jaylen Brown contributed 24. Trae Young had 35 points and 13 assists for Atlanta despite their losing effort.




  • Veteran Los Angeles Clippers point guard, Russell Westbrook has passed Isaiah Thomas and taken over the 9th spot on the NBA's career assists list. The 34-year-old has played for 5 teams over his 15 seasons in the NBA, he took over the 9th spot from the Pistons legend with his 3rd assist in Saturdays game against the New York Knicks.





NHL


  • The Boston Bruins are the 1st team to clinch a playoff spot after the New York Islanders' loss to the Washington Capitals on Saturday. This will be the Bruins 7th straight playoff appearance, which 3rd longest streak in franchise history.



  • Tampa Bay Lightning forward Steven Stamkos suffered a leg injury against the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday. After battling with Joey Anderson in the 1st period Stamkos fell, immediately grabbing his left leg upon getting up, went to the bench and did not return.





MLB


  • The Arizona Diamondbacks have signed top prospect Corbin Carrol to an 8-year contract extension. The deal is reportedly worth $111 million, with a $28-million club option in 2031 that can be bought out for $5 million.
