Report: USMNT General Manager not Returning to Role

The echelon at the top of the United State Men's National Team will have a different look as the year 2023 progresses.

General Manager, Brian McBride will not be returning to the role, sources have revealed.

McBride, who scored 30 goals in 95 appearances for the U.S. as a player, became the general manager of the men's team in 2020.

His departure comes amid an ongoing review into the status of Berhalter, whose contract with the national team expired after the World Cup.

Soccer Upheaval

The change comes amid a post-World Cup period that has been anything but peaceful for the federation. The USMNT met, but did not particularly exceed, expectations at the World Cup, getting out of their group before falling to the Netherlands in the round of 16.

U.S. Soccer had always maintained that there would be a review following the World Cup, but in the intervening weeks, any hope of a straightforward process are long gone. Shortly after returning from Qatar, Gregg Berhalter told a leadership conference that he nearly sent a player home from the tournament, with Gio Reyna coming forward as the player in question shortly thereafter.

That set off a cascade of controversies, all while the U.S. Soccer review continued. Berhalter confessed to a domestic violence incident, asserting that he went public to head off an attempt to blackmail him from an unnamed source. Reyna’s parents, former U.S. internationals Claudio and Danielle Reyna, made public statements saying they had been the source of that information, though they claimed they were not attempting to leverage the report against Berhalter.

Way Forward

Assistant coach Anthony Hudson will lead the US in a training camp that begins on Sunday, leading up to two friendly matches, but his tenure is currently just on an interim basis. Berhalter has said that he would like to return to the head coaching job for the 2026 World Cup cycle. Sporting director Earnie Stewart is conducting the review and has said he has maintained "a pool of candidates at any given moment.
