Red Sox Xander Bogaerts Open to In Season Contract Talks

 Here we go again boys and girls.

Harken back to the end of the lock out. The Sox offered Xander Bogaerts a one-year extension just after training camp opened. which would have given him a new four-year, $90 million pact, but the X-Man seemed to have his eye on a contract more in line with what other recently cashed up shortstops are pulling down. Carlos Correa, Francisco Lindor, and Corey Seager have signed deals paying them around 35 million a year.

Xander Bogaerts has opened the door back up to extension talks during the season: “I don’t know how this would work. But if they talk to Scott behind closed doors and it’s something that’s fair, he can come to me.” Bogaerts said. Pay him. Now. No excuse.#RedSox | #DirtyWater pic.twitter.com/Sj8XQHljo8 — Tyler Milliken ⚾️ (@tylermilliken_) May 15, 2022

Bogaerts told Globe head Pete Abe before the Sox pissed away their chance to sweep the Rangers.

“I don’t know how this would work, But if they talk to (agent) Scott (Boras) behind closed doors and it’s something that’s fair, he can come to me. We’ll see how that goes.”

Xander Bogaerts hitting .347 through 32 games is absolutely insane. Extend that man immediately — Grandstand Productions (@Grandstanprod) May 14, 2022

Bogaerts, a three time all star, already owns two World Series Rings and four silver slugger awards makes this statement, as one of the hottest hitters in this MLB season. While his power numbers: just 2 home runs to go along with 8 doubles aren’t reminding anyone of his 2018 season, when he belted 33 round trippers and drove in 117 he is opening up the possibility of an extension while slashing a .344/.390/.456/.846 line. That’s leverage. Chaim Bloom’s big off season acquisition Trevor Story is struggling at second. This may be the perfect time for Xander to use that leverage. We know the Fenway faithful are behind this 100 percent.

@RedSox – today would be a great day to re-sign Xander Bogaerts. — Jon BermanMusic (@jonberman) May 15, 2022

But will Bloom come to the table? Will he hand the much beloved Bogaerts a deal that will keep him here in Boston for the remainder of his career ? ( I dont think he will ) Will Xander be open to taking even the slightest home discount ? Not this time. And will there be anything left to offer Rafael Devers when all is said and done. Excuse me but I think these two are more closely tied together than anyone believes. If Xander is allowed to walk or is traded away I think it’s going to be harder to keep Devers here in Boston . And if he’s paid? I think Jon Henry and Bloom will cry poverty. when it comes to the loveable menace
