Dateline Boston: The Red Sox (hopefully pending a physical) are in agreement with reliever Matt Strahm on a two-year deal, The contract is worth $8MM per w a club option . Jon Heyman of the MLB Network had this at one year for three. A Team with a net worth north of 3 Billion and this is what you are getting ?
Matt Strahm to the Red Sox. Lefty reliever has previously pitched for the Royals and Padres. He was good in 2016, 2018 & 2020; not so good in 2017, 2019 & 2021. Maybe this is why he got a 1-year deal, he’s only good in even years. #RedSox https://t.co/DJka2l05M4 — Dan Kelley (@DanKelley66) March 13, 2022
Strahm spent the past four seasons with the Padres after spending his first two years with the Royals, the team that drafted him out of Neosho County Community College in Kansas. The 30-year-old southpaw has spent most of his career in the bullpen, but he can also give you a spot start, having made 25 over his six-year career.
The Matt Strahm signing is a sneaky good one for the Sox pen. Won’t blow your doors off with 100 but he can pitch. Misses barrels and a lot of soft outs. Low to mid 90s with solid hard slider, curveball, and will mix in changeups vs RHH. Across his body which can be tough on LHH. — Will Middlebrooks (@middlebrooks) March 13, 2022
Las you can see in the tweet from my good friend Dan Kelly last season, as in every odd year was a bit of a lost year for Strahm. He took the hill for just 6 1/3 innings over six appearances for the Padres, with another three appearances in Triple-A. Strahm missed most of the year after surgery to repair the patellar tendon in his knee. He returned in August, only to land back on the disabled list later in the month with knee inflammation.
Josh Taylor , Darwin Hernandez and Austin Davis are the other lefties in the sox pen , going to be interesting to see how Straham fits into Alex Cora’ pen plans.
