Red Sox comeback, say No to No-No, to Shut out, to split with the Yankees

It seemed for a moment the Boston Red Sox were carrying Saturday’s heartbreaking Yankees comeback victory into yesterday. Then the Eighth Inning happened. Alex Verdugo came to the plate and crushed Domingo Germans bid to be the first pitcher to throw a no-hitter against the Red Sox at home since the Tigers Jim Bunning did it back in 1958.

Call it a comeback

Down 4-0 Verdugo’s eighth-inning double to the right-field fence sparked the old town team, Hunter Renfro immediately knocked him in with a double of his own, Christian Vazquez was not going to be left out of the party and knocked Renfro in with a single. And of all people “Crawncy” Cordero backed that up with a single of his own. Setting Kiké Hernandez up to drive in two to cut the lead to 4-3. Kevin Plawecki came to the dish for rookie Jarren Duran and made Cora look again like a genius with a fielder’s choice RBI to tie the game up at 4-4 and Hernandez scored on a Xander Bogaerts RBI sac fly to right. 5-4 SOX WIN!!! Red Sox comeback

GO AHEAD, CALL IT A COMEBACK! FINAL: #RedSox 5, Yankees 4#DirtyWater — Red Sox (@RedSox) July 25, 2021

More than Boston bats

Not to be lost in all this is Josh Taylor coming into the seventh. basses jacked with Yankees. And he shut down Mike Stanton and Rougned Odor to keep the Sox hopes alive. Matt Barnes earned his 21st save of the year. And Brandon Workman got the W. With the win and Rays 3-2 loss to the Guardians the Sox reclaim the top of the AL East.

Today had a little of that “Mother’s Day Miracle” feel to it, don’t you think? #RedSox — Tom Caron (@TomCaron) July 25, 2021

There is just no quit in this team, no loss to deflating, no situation they can’t brush off. And no game they feel is out of reach. This W is their AL-leading 32nd come-from-behind win of the season. That stat and yesterday’s victory for a 3-1 series win was the proof in that pudding. Bring on the Bluejays.
