Red Sox: Bargain Bin Bloom at it Again

According to multiple reports, the Red sox are interested in free agent OF Mitch Haniger. He late of the Seattle Mariners. Haniger is one of Bloom's eye popping low risk high reward guys who may actually be worth the risk.

When healthy Haniger has been a solid piece in Seattle , his 162 game average .261/32/93 would be enticing to almost any club for a 31 year old. Even if he does strike out at a rate of almost 3 to 1 . but that's the rub. The man is almost never healthy. After slogging it out in the minors for 8 years (Deep Respect) Mitch has managed to play more than 150 games just twice in his six major league seasons. He had sports hernia surgery and missed most of 2019 and all of 2020 recovering from that procedure. a high ankle sprain last April limiting his play to only 57 games last year. So you can see this isn't a man who is just in love with the tub he has had some serious injuries. Yes, a high ankle sprain can be serious.

But when he has been on the field. The guy is a player. An All Star and in the deep conversation in 2018 for MVP. while not a gold glove candidate he is an above average outfielder. And he swings from his heels. A right handed right fielder who hits for power is just what this team needs. Is he a cornerstone ? No but it's a step in the right direction. the Sox glaring need last season was home run pop and Mitch checks that box. Come on you didn't expect Judge to come here.
