Red Sox and Phillies Swap Cash for Trash

The Red Sox have acquired right-handed pitcher James Norwood from the Phillies in exchange for cash considerations ( who knew the Sox had any), The Phillies announced yesterday.

✅ 8.31 ERA ➡️ 4.27 xERA ✅ 91st percentile fastball velocity ✅ 86th percentile chase rate ✅ 43% split-finger whiff rate ✅ 33% slider putaway rate Quiet please, Chaim Bloom masterclass in session. https://t.co/Rk7O6FZR8z pic.twitter.com/221pVnqpoi — Ahaan Rungta (@AhaanRungta) June 18, 2022

The Phillies had designated Norwood for assignment back on the thirteenth of June, giving them a couple of days to find a taker. Norwood had struggled with the Phillies all year, He made 20 appearances putting up an 8.31 ERA. But what I’m sure caught Super Nerd Chaim Bloom’s eye is his 3.65 FIP, which suggests there could be some bad luck involved here. Ala Nick Pivetta who the Sox GM brought over from Philly as well.

#RedSox have acquired reliever James Norwood from the #Phillies for cash considerations. Norwood has a 8.31 ERA/3.65 FIP over 17.1 IP this season with a 11.4 K/9 and 4.7 BB/9. 91st percentile in Barrel%, 86th percentile in Chase Rate.#DirtyWater| #MLBpic.twitter.com/Q8stbiRfEB — Tyler Milliken ⚾️ (@tylermilliken_) June 18, 2022

Norwood has shown he has had the stuff, his trouble is with command. This is the area the Sox pitching coach Dave Bush will look to recycle.  In 17 1/3 innings of work so far this season Norwood  struck out 22 batters while walking just 9 . Those numbers aren’t hideous, but the hot garbage is, he also gave up 24 hits over those 17 ⅓ . There is no doubt he is pitching in front of a much better defense here in Boston than he was in Philadelphia. If he can get some ground ball luck ? Norwood could find better results here than down Philly. God Knows this team needs to try something. Lets see if Bloom’s dumpster diving can add anything to this pathetic pen.
