NL Weekend Preview 8/25

The New York Mets NL East lead that looked like the knockout punch they needed quickly turned back to pure panic this week as it has shrunk to just 1 ½ game. Braves fans feel better headed to the weekend knowing they have the Mets right where they wanted. After a rough series, Philadelphia has put themselves right back into a wildcard spot. Miami and Washington continue to slide down the standings. The NL East crown will be a race to the finish!

After getting swept by crosstown rivals, the New York Yankees, Jacob deGrom and Co. try to return to their winning ways this weekend. It might look like an easy sweep, but the Rockies gave the St. Louis Cardinals everything they could handle just weeks ago.

In an essential NL series with playoff implications, Atlanta will be primed to show why they can act like the defending champs. Pitching will be the key for Atlanta in slowing down a potent offense. Conversely, scoring plenty of runs will make that problem less stressful.

Philadelphia Phillies (69-55)

. AUG 26-28 Vs. Pirates

The battle of Pennsylvania is on. I want to say this rivalry is significant right now, but it doesn’t. Suppose you’re a fan of either team. Sorry, not sorry. Desperation is the mode Philadelphia needs to be in the rest of the way.  Lookout for the Phillies to continue their hot streak into September. Bryce Harper is due back Friday

Miami Marlins (54-70)

. AUG 26-28 Vs. Dodgers

Marlins fans wish they didn’t have to see the Dodgers after what happened to them. Getting swept is no fun, and Miami could experience that this weekend. Sandy Alcantara will pitch this weekend, giving them a significant advantage.

Washington Nationals (42-83)

. AUG 25-28 Vs. Reds

Playing out the final 6-7 weeks of the regular season will allow the Nationals organization to find out what kind of team they have going into 2023. There are plenty of negatives to having a bad team, but the only positive is that you can bring up and down players without thinking, “Is this going to impact our playoff run.”
