The New York Giants have new management for the upcoming 2022 NFL Draft. Dave Gettleman is no longer the general manager. Joe Schoen is the new general manager and he has ton of options in the upcoming 2022 NFL Draft. He will have the fifth and seventh overall selections. Will he decide to keep those picks or will he decide to trade back with one of those selections?
There are tons of options here with this football team because New York has ton of holes to fill. The Giants need to take the best player available in most instances and will see how it plays out. They have a very long way to go, but hitting it in the draft and growing your talent is what they need to do. What are some of their draft needs?
Offensive Line
This is a massive hole on this football team. The offensive line is by far the most significant weakness. It is going to depend on how the draft falls. It is possible they land only one player or potentially two starters on this line after the draft. Three potential names that are out there are Evan Neal (Alabama), Ikem Ekwonu (North Carolina State), and Charles Cross (Mississippi State).
The most likely player selected by the New York Giants would be Cross. They need a starting right tackle in the worst way. Andrew Thomas is the starting left tackle and Evan Neal is also a left tackle. The other in Ekwonu is a left tackle but can play left guard and the Giants don’t have a true starting left guard.
Cornerback
There are only two cornerbacks that can go in the Top 10 or the Top 15. They are Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner from Cincinnatti or Derek Stingley Jr. from LSU. Gardner could potentially be drafted in the Top 4, while Stingley Jr. can slip. It is very possible that the New York Giants also move off of cornerback James Bradberry IV to make more cap space on the roster.
Gardner would be a perfect fit for this Wink Martindale blitz defense. Stingley Jr. is more a cornerback that is from the LSU factory. You can also add in safety Kyle Hamilton from Notre Dame to the mix. A safety combo of Xavier McKinney Jr. and Kyle Hamilton would be dangerous for the New York Giants.
Wide Receiver
What if the New York Giants trade down from the fifth spot to the 16th and 18th spots in the 2022 NFL Draft with the New Orleans Saints? That would give them three picks. They could use one of those picks on a wide receiver. Other than Kadarius Toney and Kenny Golladay, they don’t have much explosiveness at the position.
Garrett Wilson, Ohio State, Drake London, USC, and Jameson Williams, Alabama could be the picks here. Wilson would be the best selection in this scenario. London may have bust potential and Williams has a knee issue and the New York Giants don’t need more injured players. The last thing New York needs is risky draft picks. The Giants scouting department needs to nail these picks and so does general manager Joe Schoen.
