MLB AL East week preview – 8/23/21

The Yankees look to continue to beat the Twins. The Red Sox are hoping to get back on track. The Jays hope to inch closer while the Rays look to stay up top. Let’s see what happened over the weekend and what’s to come this week in the American League East.

TAMPA BAY RAYS

The Rays took on the White Sox over the weekend. Michael Wacha went five innings and gave up four runs. Ji-Man Choi hit his 9th home run. Austin Meadows went 2-for-4. It went into the 11th when JT Chargois had his third blown save. The Rays lost 7-5 in 11 innings.

Luis Patino went six innings and gave up two runs. Wander Franco, Manuel Margot, and Joey Wendle went 2-for-4. The Rays won 8-4.

Chris Archer only went two innings and exited the game with an injury.  Meadows went 3-for-4. Choi also left the game with an injury. Yandy Diaz took over and went 2-for-3. The Rays won 9-0.

The Rays head to Philadelphia to face the Phillies. Drew Rasmussen is scheduled to pitch. Then they head to Baltimore to face the O’s over the weekend.

NEW YORK YANKEES

After winning the first game against the Twins, the Yankees sent Nestor Cortes Jr.on the mound. He went seven innings and gave up two runs. Aaron Judge hit his 27th home run. Luke Voit went 4-for-5 and hit his 7th home run. DJ LeMahieu when 2-for-4 and hit his 8th home run. Brett Gardner went 2-for-2. The Yanks won 10-2.

Gerrit Cole went six scoreless innings. Andrew Velazquez hit his first MLB career home run in the 8th inning. Giancarlo Stanton and Voit went 2-for-4. Yanks won 7-1.

Hurricane Henri postponed the series finale and the game will be made up on September 13th.

The Yankees next head to Atlanta to face the Braves for two games. No starters have been announced yet. Then they head west to face the A’s.

BOSTON RED SOX

Brock Holt and the Rangers came into town. Chris Sale pitched five scoreless innings. Xander Bogaerts hit his 20th home run and went 2-for-4. Kyle Schwarber went 2-for-2 with two walks. The bullpen managed to keep the Rangers scoreless. Sox won 6-0.

Eduardo Rodriguez went 3.2 innings and gave up five runs against the Rangers. This wasn’t what the Sox needed. Martin Perez gave up four runs in the inning he pitched. The defense was very sloppy with five errors. Sox embarrassingly lost 10-1.

Hurricane Henri postponed that series finale against the Rangers. The game will be made up today at 1 pm. Nathan Eovaldi is scheduled to pitch. Then the Twins come into town for three games. The Sox weekend will be facing the Indians.

TORONTO BLUE JAYS

Robbie Rays pitched eight innings and gave up only one run to the Tigers. Vladimir Guerrero Jr.hit his 36th home run.  The Jays lost 4-1.

Hyun Jin Ryu went seven scoreless innings. Ryan Grichuk hit his 21st home run. Marcus Semien went 3-for-4 and hit his 30th home run.  The Jays won 3-0.

Steven Matz pitched in the series finale. He went six innings and gave up one run. That one run was the 500th career home run for Miguel Cabrera. Lourdes Gurriel Jr.went 3-for-5. Bo Bichette went 3-for-6. The Jays lost 5-3 in 11 innings.

The White Sox enter Toronto for four games. Alek Manoah, Jose Berrios, Robbie Ray, and Ryu are scheduled to pitch.

BALTIMORE ORIOLES

Keegan Akin went five innings and gave up three runs against the Braves. Trey Mancini went 2-for-4. The O’s lost 3-0.

Matt Harvey went 5.1 innings and gave up four runs. Ryan Mountcastle hit his 21st home run. Anthony Santander went 2-for-4 with two home runs. Ramon Urias hit his 7th home run. Trey Mancini went 2-for-4. The O’s lost 5-4. John Means went six innings and gave up three runs. Richie Martin went 2-for-3. Urias went 2-for-4. The O’s lost 3-1.

The O’s next face the Angels. Spenser Watkins and Keegan Akin are scheduled to pitch. After, the Rays come into town to play over the weekend.

American League East: Let’s spin it

The Yankees gained a game on the Red Sox in the standings. With both the Yankees and Red Sox off on Sunday, the Rays are now 4.5 games ahead of the Yankees and seven games ahead of the Red Sox. The Wild Card standings should be interesting as the season gets closer to the end.
