Jessica Marie’s AL East weekend recap 8/14

The Red Sox look to have their first series win against an AL East team. The Orioles and Rays fight for the third wild card spot.

NEW YORK YANKEES (72-43)

Domingo German pitched six innings, struck out four, and gave up one run against the Red Sox. Aaron Judge hit his 46th home run. Jose Trevino went 2-for-4. Clay Holmes hasn’t found it yet and Aaron Boone left him in one batter too long. The Yankees lost 3-2.

Frankie Montas pitched five innings, struck out four, and gave up two runs. Isiah Kiner-Falefa hit his first home run of the season to tie the game and bunted in the 9th to bring in the go-ahead run. The Yanks won 3-2. It was also the 400th win for Aaron Boone as manager.

Jameson Taillon pitched seven innings, struck out three, and gave up three runs. The two hits were from Andrew Benintendi and Miguel Andujar. The Yanks lost 3-0.

The Yankees head back home to face the Rays. Gerrit Cole, Nestor Cortes, and Domingo German are scheduled to pitch.

BOSTON RED SOX (57-59)

Nathan Eovaldi pitched six innings, struck out three, and gave up two runs against the Yankees. J.D. Martinez went 3-for-4 and got 2 RBI. The Sox won 3-2 in extra innings. 

Kutter Crawford pitched six innings, struck out five, and gave up two runs. Alex Verdugo went 2-for-2 with a walk. Reese McGuire went 2-for-3. The Sox lost 3-2.

Michael Wacha returned from the IL. He pitched seven scoreless innings and struck out nine. Rafael Dever went 2-for-4 with a home run. Tommy Pham went 3-for-4. The Sox won 3-0. It is their first series win against an AL East team.

After the off day, the Sox head to face the Pirates. , Nick Pivetta, Rich Hill, and Nathan Eovaldi are scheduled to pitch.

TORONTO BLUE JAYS (61-52)

Jose Berrios pitched four innings, struck out one, and gave up eight runs against the Guardians. Vladimir Guerrero Jr went 1-for-4. The Jays lost 8-0.

Mitch White pitched4.2 innings, struck out three, and gave up one run. The runs came off the bats of Matt Chapman and Teoscar Hernandez. The Jays won 2-1.

Kevin Gausman pitched 4.2 innings, struck out five, and gave up five runs. Lourdes Gurriel Jr went 3-for-4. The Jays lost 7-2.

The Orioles come into town for three games. Yusei Kikuchi, Alek Manoah, and Ross Stripling are scheduled to pitch.

TAMPA BAY RAYS (60-53)

Corey Kluber pitched 5.2 innings, struck out four, and gave up seven runs against the Orioles. Randy Arozarena hit his 14th home run of the year. The Rays lost 10-3.

Shane McClanahan pitched six innings, struck out four, and gave up two runs. Jose Siri went 3-for-4. Arozarena went 2-for-3 with two walks. The Rays won 8-2.

Drew Rasmussen pitched 8.1 innings, struck out seven, and gave up one run. He flirted with a no-hitter going into the 8th inning. Francisco Mejia went 2-for-4. Taylor Walls went 2-for-3.

The Rays head to New York to face the Yankees. Jeffrey Springs and Corey Kluber are scheduled to pitch.

BALTIMORE ORIOLES (59-55)

Austin Voth pitched 5.1 innings, struck out five, and gave up two runs against the Rays. Cedric Mullins went 3-for-6. Anthony Santander went 3-for-5. Rougned Odor went 4-for-5. The O’s won 10-3. 

DL Hall pitched 3.2 innings, struck out six, and gave up five runs. Jorge Mateo went 1-for-3. Odor went 2-for-3 with a walk. Robinson Chirinos went 2-for-4. The O’s lost 8-2.

Jordan Lyles pitched 4.1 innings, struck out nine, and gave up four runs. Mateo was the only hit for the offense. The O’s lost 4-1.

The O’s head to Toronto to face the Jays. Kyle Bradish, Dean Kremer, and Austin Voth are scheduled to pitch.

OUTSIDE THE AL EAST

It was announced by MLB that Fernando Tatis Jr has been suspended 80 games for testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance.
