Jessica Marie’ AL East week recap- 7/15

Joey Votto and the Reds make their way into the Bronx to face the Yankees. The Red Sox and Rays go at it for the top Wild Card spot. The Orioles look to continue being hot.

NEW YORK YANKEES (62-27)

Gerrit Cole pitched seven scoreless innings and struck out 11 against the Reds. GLeyber Torres went 3-for-4 with a walk. CLay Holmes exited the game with the bases loaded and no outs after giving up two runs.  The Yankees lost 4-3.

Luis Severino pitched two innings, struck out one, and gave up four runs. He exited the game early due to an injury. He is likely to be placed on the Injured List. Giancarlo Stanton hit his 23rd home run of the year. DJ LeMahieu went 2-for-5. Isiah Kiner-Falefa went 2-for-4. The Yanks won 7-6.

Nestor Cortes pitched seven innings, struck out four, and gave up one run. Aaron Judge hit his 31st home run of the year. Matt Carpenter hit his 11th home run. Torres hit his 14th home run. LeMahieu left seven runners on. The Yanks lost 7-6.

The Red Sox come into town for the weekend. Jordan Montgomery, Jameson Taillon, and Gerrit Cole are scheduled to pitch. 

BOSTON RED SOX (47-43)

Brayan Bello pitched four innings, struck out five, and gave up five runs against the Rays. J.D. Martinez went 2-for-4. Alex Verdugo went 2-for-4. Xander Bogaerts went 2-for-3 with a walk. The Sox lost 10-5.

Chris Sale made his 2022 debut. He pitched five scoreless innings and struck out five. Alex Verdugo went 2-for-4. Jeter Downs took over for Trevor Story who exited due to a hand bruise. He went 2-for-2. The Sox lost 3-2.

Josh Winckowski pitched six innings, struck out five, and gave up three runs. Xander Bogaerts went 2-for-3. The Sox lost 4-1. 

Kutter Crawford pitched six innings, struck out six, and gave up three runs. Rafael Devers went 2-for-4 with a home run. Bogaerts went 2-for-4. The Sox lost 5-4.

The Sox head to the Bronx for the weekend. Nathan Eovaldi is expected to return from the IL and start tonight. Nick Pivetta and Chris Sale follow him. 

TAMPA BAY RAYS (49-40)

Matt Wisler pitched one scoreless inning and struck out one against the Red Sox. Yandy Diaz went 3-for-3. Francisco Mejia went 2-for-4. The Rays won 10-5.

Corey Kluber pitched six innings, struck out seven, and gave up two runs. Harold Ramirez went 2-for-4. The Rays won 3-2.

Shane McClanahan pitched 6.1 innings, struck out six, and gave up one run. Yandy Diaz went 1-for-4. Taylor Walls went 1-for-4. The Rays won 4-1.

Drew Rasmussen pitched six innings, struck out five, and gave up three runs. Ji-Man Choi went 2-for-4. Jonathan Aranda went 2-for-3. The Rays won 5-4.

The red-hot Orioles come into town to try to spoil the Rays in the standings. Luis Patino and Correy Kluber are scheduled to pitch. 

TORONTO BLUE JAYS (47-43)

Jose Berrios pitched six innings, struck out 13, and gave up three runs against the Phillies. Lourdes GUrriel Jr went 4-for-4. Alejandro Kirk went 2-for-4. Teoscar Hernandez went 2-for-4. The Jays won 4-3.

It was announced before the game that the manager, Charlie Montoyo, was fired. Ross Stripling pitched seven innings, struck out six, and gave up two runs; none earned. Teoscar Hernandez went 2-for-4 with a home run. Santiago Espinal went 2-for-4. The Jays won 8-2.

The Royals come into town for four games. They have to replace 10 players due to being unvaccinated. Kevin Gausman, Alek Manoah, and Jose Berrios are scheduled to pitch. 

BALTIMORE ORIOLES (45-44)

Jordan Lyles pitched seven innings, struck out five, and gave up two runs against the Cubs. Ramon Urias went 3-for-4 with a home run. Jorge Mateo went 2-for-4 with a home run. The O’s won 4-2. They are playing .500 baseball. 

Spenser Watkins pitched five innings, struck out five, and gave up one run. Austin Hays went 4-for-5. Cedric Mullins went 2-for-4. The O’s won 7-1.

The O’s head to Tampa to face the Rays. Tyler Wells and Dean Kremer are scheduled to pitch.
