Jacksonville Jaguars move Gardner Minshew to Philadelphia Eagles

The Jacksonville Jaguars’ new head coach, Urban Meyer, announced on Wednesday that first-overall pick Trevor Lawrence would start the season as his number one quarterback. And it seems he doesn’t want the franchise savior looking over his shoulder and seeing Gardner Minshew on the sidelines. Or the great unwashed of Jacksonville screaming for him if Lawrence gets off to a slow start. So he traded Gardener to the Philadelphia Eagles this morning.

Cost of doing business

Saturday morning, to the surprise of almost no one, Minshew was gone to Philly to sit behind another flavor of the month, Jalen Hurts, who the Eagles selected in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. The Eagles will send back a conditional sixth-round pick that could become a fifth-rounder if Minshew is in for 50% of the plays of just three games during the 2021 season. I’m telling you all now – this will happen. This feels like a vote of no confidence in Jalen Hurts

Trade: Jaguars are sending QB Gardner Minshew II to the Philadelphia Eagles for a conditional 2022 sixth-round pick, per sources. The 6th-round pick could go to a 5th if Minshew plays in 50 percent of the plays in three games this season. — Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) August 28, 2021

Personally painful (for the Patriots)

For those of you new to the program here, I was very high on Minshew coming out of Washington State in 2019. But Bill Belichick went in another dumber direction, taking Jarrett Stidham a round earlier at 133. Then when the Jags secured the first pick in last year’s draft I hatched my fiendish plot to bring Gardner Minshew to New England to replace Cam Newton and take the Patriots back to the playoffs. Or at the least hold a spot down for “The Next Guy“.

My plot was rebuffed by some of the best minds in football, even though Minshew was perfect for the Patriots’ bastardized Erhardt-Perkins system. Being told the cost would be too high. Well, a future fifth doesn’t seem too high considering most said it would have cost at least a 4th to bring Minshew north to Foxboro.

The Minshew Shakeout

The unthreatening C.J. Beathard will become the number two behind Lawrence in Jacksonville and the Eagles have cut ties with Nick Mullens. Gardener will join a QB room with Hurts and Joe “Elite“ Flacco. While The Patriots are still stuck starting the season with Newton.
