Harold Williams’ Weekly Wrestling: [WWE] 6/10/22

Hello WWE fans, today we will look at the results of recent WWE shows, Natalya back in the title scene, the Asuka-Becky Lynch program, what should be next for Mustafa Ali and Seth Rollins, the Finn Balor/Edge/AJ Styles/Judgement Day situation, Alba Fyre’s new gimmick, and Bayley’s eventual return.

RESULTS

WWE Friday Night SmackDown

6/3/22

The Brawling Brutes (Butch, Ridge Holland & Sheamus) defeated Drew McIntyre & The New Day (Kofi Kingston & Xavier Woods)

Jinder Mahal (w/Shanky) defeated Humberto (w/ Angel)

Natalya defeated Aliyah,  Raquel Rodriguez, Shayna Baszler, Shotzi, and Xia Li in a “WWE SmackDown Women’s Title #1 Contendership Six Pack Challenge”

Happy Corbin defeated Madcap Moss via disqualification

WWE RAW / WWE SmackDown Tag Team Champions The Usos (Jey & Jimmy Uso) defeated Riddle & Shinsuke Nakamura

It’s great to see Natalya back in the WWE Women’s Title scene- she’s earned it. Natalya is the wrestler who WWE always turns to when someone needs to help and put over newer female talent, on the main roster as well as in NXT. She and WWE SmackDown Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey faced each other recently at a “WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event”, where Rousey was the winner, but when they wrestle each other on WWE-TV or at a WWE Premium Live Event, Natalya should win the championship. Rousey ruled UFC’s bantamweight division with a reign as champion that was one the longest of all time, but this is WWE, which has been Natalya’s home for 15 years, where she has been WWE Divas Champion and WWE SmackDown Women’s Champion.

WWE Hall In A Call 2022

6/4/202

WWE RAW Women’s Champion Bianca Belair defeated Asuka and Becky Lynch in a “Triple Threat” match

Bobby Lashley defeated MVP & Omos in a, “Two On One Handicap” match

Kevin Owens defeated Ezekiel

Judgment Day (Damian Priest, Edge & Rhea Ripley) defeated AJ Styles, Finn Balor & Liv Morgan in a “Mixed Six Man Tag Team” match

Madcap Moss defeated Happy Corbin in a, “No Holds Barred” match

WWE United States Champion Theory defeated Mustafa Ali

Cody Rhodes defeated Seth Rollins in a “Hell In A Cell” match

The outcome of the WWE RAW Women’s Championship is strange to me. Asuka-Becky Lynch programs are always well-received by fans, and upon Asuka’s recent return, that’s the program they were given, with Asuka back to stop Lynch from regaining the championship. But after two televised singles matches between the two, they are both out of the WWE RAW Women’s Championship scene (at least their program is continuing though, apparently). I would have had Lynch win this match, pinning Belair. Then after a series of matches between Lynch and Asuka, Lynch drops the WWE RAW Women’s Championship to Asuka. The next challenger would be either Bianca Belair (who has a win over Asuka) or Alexa Bliss (who also has a win over Asuka and has been on a string of singles wins), with a match between Belair and Bliss deciding who the challenger would be. Fans have not seen many Asuka-Belair or Asuka-Bliss matches, so either program would be relatively fresh.

With Theory’s successful WWE United States Championship defense,  Mustafa Ali will likely move on to something new. He’s back in action, he’s healthy and he’s willing to work, now would be a good time to utilize him in matches that would capture fans’ interest. For example, WWE fans who did not watch 205 Live are not aware of the good chemistry that Ali and Cedric Alexander have in matches with each other. Now would be a good time to show them.

With the Cody Rhodes-Seth Rollins program seemingly now over (for now at least), Rollins can challenge Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship, since he defeated Reigns via disqualification in their Royal Rumble match. After Reigns and Rollins settle their unfinished business, then perhaps Rhodes can receive a title shot.

WWE RAW

Becky Lynch vs. Dana Brooke resulted in a no contest

WWE 24/7 Champion Dana Brooke defeated Becky Lynch

Riddle defeated The Miz (w/ Maryse)

The Street Profits (Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford) defeated The Usos (Jey & Jimmy Uso) in a “WWE RAW Tag Team Title / WWE SmackDown Tag Team Title Championship Contenders” match

Veer Mahaan defeated Dominik Mysterio (w/Rey Mysterio) via disqualification

Omos (w/ MVP) defeated Cedric Alexander

Ezekiel defeated Otis (w/ Chad Gable)

Rhea Ripley defeated Alexa Bliss, Doudrop, and Liv Morgan in a “WWE RAW Women’s Title #1 Contendership Fatal Four Way” match

Also on this episode, Finn Balor appeared as the newest recruit into Edge’s Judgement Day faction, and then Balor, Rhea Ripley, and Damien Priest kicked Edge out of the faction, with Balor being the new leader. I have mixed feelings about this. In recent weeks, Balor was affiliated with AJ Styles and Liv Morgan in a faction similar to Bullet Club, the faction that Balor was the original leader of. And now he has left that faction and become the leader of a completely different type of faction. It looks a bit odd to me, and I had been enjoying the Balor/Styles/Morgan team. However, I am also looking forward to seeing what Balor does as leader of Judgment Day. He’s a great wrestler and performer, so perhaps Balor can make this work just like he did in every other faction Balor has been the leader of.

There are reports that this change in leadership was done as a result of Edge disagreeing with a creative direction that WWE is interested in going with the Judgement Day faction. It’s an unfortunate situation for Edge, as he previously had not been the leader of a faction since La Familia in the 2000s, and we have yet to see how big Judgement Day will ultimately get. And there is even potential for a Judgement Day-Bloodline match at Survivor Series this year, which could be very beneficial for Judgement Day, considering the fact that The Bloodline is the dominant faction in WWE currently.

And as for AJ Styles, based on his recent reaction to Judgement Day, it remains to be seen if he and Finn Balor will simply go their separate ways, or if Styles and Judgement Day, with Balor now included, will continue the war. This is intriguing.

Alba Fyre defeated Tatum Paxley

I’m getting used to Alba Fyre’s new name and gimmick now. It didn’t take long- consistently a great wrestler and a great performer as well, she’s making it work. Hopefully Fyre is enjoying it as well.

It appears that Bayley is teasing a return, and although there is no doubt that she will be returning sooner than later, the question is, which brand will Bayley with affiliated with? I would put her on SmackDown- I think another Bayley-Shayna Baszler program would interest fans.
