MORE AEW

Next week on “AEW Dynamite”, Jeff Hardy will wrestle Bobby Fish in an “Owen Hart Foundation Men’s Tournament Qualifier” match. While it has been great seeing Hardy in tag action since his AEW debut, the singles division is where Hardy is most valuable, and these are the types of matches where he shines the most.

Also next week, ROH Women’s World Champion Deonna Purrazzo will face ROH Interim Women’s Champion Mercedes Martinez in a match that will unify the two titles. The fact that ROH currently has two women’s champions is an unusual one and the reason for it is that Purrazzo is under contract with Impact Wrestling, and she defeated Rok-C for the championship at an Impact Wrestling event at a time when Rok-C was freelancer due to ROH having had released wrestlers from their contracts with the plan of going on hiatus.

Two months later, Tony Khan purchased ROH. He was now the owner of the ROH Women’s World Championship, but the champion Deonna Purrazzo was under contract with Impact Wrestling. So it was decided that Mercedes Martinez would become ROH Interim Women’s Champion at Supercard of Honor XV, and would face Purrazzo at a later date (she was booked elsewhere the night of the ROH event).

I would not have crowned an interim champion at Supercard of Honor XV- I would have had the Mercedes Martinez-Willow Nightingale match decide who the number one contender was. I feel that an interim champion is unnecessary. However, it’s very likely that the new ROH management felt that all of their singles titles had to be on the line at the major ROH event, which is understandable.
