Harold Williams’ Weekly Wrestling: [AEW] 3/17/22

Hello AEW fans, today we will look at the results of recent AEW shows, Swerve Strickland’s debut, Chris Jericho’s new faction, Wardlow trying to gain his freedom from MJF, and Thunder Rosa winning the AEW Women’s World Championship.

AEW is doing good things with Strickland already. As I suggested last month, he was put in a match with Tony Nese. They are very familiar with each other and work well together. It was a good debut match.

Bryan Danielson & Jon Moxley (w/ William Regal) defeated Chuck Taylor & Wheeler Yuta

AEW TNT Champion Scorpio Sky defeated Wardlow

The Hardys (Jeff & Matt Hardy) defeated Private Party (Isiah Kassidy & Marq Quen)

Thunder Rosa defeated AEW Women’s World Champion Dr. Britt Baker DMD in a “Steel Cage” match to become the new AEW Women’s World Champion.

Also on this episode, Chris Jericho introduced a new faction- The Jericho Appreciation Society. During his promo, Jericho stated that he’s not a pro-wrestler, he’s a sports entertainer. This didn’t sit well with AEW fans, who love the fact that AEW prides itself on being a pro-wrestling company, as opposed to a sports entertainment company. This reminds me of the Right To Censor faction that existed in WWE from 2000 – 2001. Led by Steven Richards, the RTC was against vulgarity, high levels of violence, and scantily clad women being in WWE- things that were featured constantly in WWE at the time and appealed to most of their fans. It was a very effective way of gaining heel heat.

Wardlow’s storyline is that if he wins an AEW championship, Wardlow will be able to get a contract with AEW and get released from his contract with MJF. Most likely the storyline is going to end with this happening, but it certainly would surprise everyone if, in the end, Wardlow is unable to win a championship due to continuous interference by MJF (like what happened on this episode), and rejoins his Pinnacle faction.

With Thunder Rosa as AEW Women’s World Champion, now would be a good time to put Hikaru Shida back into the scene. She never received a rematch after Dr. Britt Baker DMD defeated her for the championship, they are the two longest-reigning AEW Women’s World Champions in the AEW history, and they both have defeated Rosa in the past. There should be a match between the two of them to decide the number one contender. In the meantime, there are other matches that Rosa could have. Rosa and Tay Conti being friends doesn’t mean that they can’t have a match with each other, and it would be the first time it has ever happened. Also, Nyla Rose defeated Thunder Rosa last year in the final match of the Eliminator Tournament United States Bracket- it wouldn’t seem unusual for Rose to stake a claim for a shot at the championship.
