Cubs recent losing streak a windfall for Red Sox?

The Red Sox are 20 games over .500  sitting uncomfortably 2.5 games in front of the Rays in the AL East.

That’s it that’s the Tweet. Chicago Cubs Trade Rumors

The Cubs on the other hand are another tweet altogether. In fact, they are an entire thread. Heading into tonight’s game with the Cardinals the Cubs are losers of twelve of their last thirteen, An eleven-game losing streak has all but sunk their hopes of making the postseason needing to leapfrog both the Cards and Reds in hopes of a wildcard spot. And in short order, are looking like sellers at the deadline instead of buyers. An old friend Jed Hoyer sees the writing on the wall, admitting to a group of Chicago writers,

“Eleven days ago, we were certainly fully on the buying side … and obviously (teams) are now calling to see which players are available,” Hoyer said. “So it’s a very different scenario than we’d expected. Life comes at you fast.” Asked whether the front office is willing to make players available, Hoyer mentioned his responsibility to consider anything “that can help build the next great Cubs team.”

Cubs that make you go ‘Hmmmm’

The Cubs have a long list of talented players due to hit free agency at the end of this season. Javier BaezKris Bryant, while not at positions of need here in Boston, are at the top of any other team’s circling vultures. But my attention turns to another name set to hit the market this offseason. A name who could fit in here nicely and is in a position of need. That name is Anthony Rizzo.

Now hold on. Yes, I understand Rizzo is not the player he was when he had been a consistent name mentioned in NL MVP talk. BUT. He is still earning Gold Gloves and still hitting baseballs hard from the left side of the plate. A-hah! now you’re seeing my madness.

The Platoon between Bobby Dalbec, Marwin Gonzalez, and Danny Santana has been Pepto-abysmal this year. First base is a black hole in the Red Sox lineup that needs to be filled and with Rizzo set to hit free agency he could and should be someone Hoyer is looking to move on from.

Let’s sweeten the deal

Hoyer, while never admitting it, knows that he is staring at a tear down in Chicago. Craig Kimbrel is back in all-star form and is set to make $8 million in the second half of this season and comes with a club option for 2022 at the same $16 million dollars. That’s $24 million Hoyer will need to use in revamping, remodeling, and reconstructing the Northside for 2021 and beyond.

Two Cubbies one Stone

I know many are talking about adding a starting pitcher at the deadline, but you know as well as I do (you know you’re smart people) that once the playoffs start it’s a bullpen-led game. Giving Alex Cora an arm like Kimbrel out in right makes this bullpen the best in baseball. Giving him a gold glove first baseman who still has pop could put them in The Hunt for Red Soxtober.
