Brave’s Deal for A’s Backstop Sean Murphy

Late yesterday afternoon ESPN Jeff Pasan announced that the Braves had acquired Sean Murphy in a three team deal involving themselves, Oakland A’s and the Milwaukee Brewers. At last count nine players are involved in this deal to bring Gold Glover Murphy to Atlanta.

Atlanta ships out their young backstop William Contreras to the Brewers. Starters Lefty Kyle Muller, righty Freddy Tarnok, veteran catcher Manny Pina and minor league right-hander Royber Salinas to the A's. Also going to Milwaukee are right-handed relievers Joel Payamps (from Oakland) and Justin Yeager. The Brewers are also sending outfielder Esteury Ruiz to the A's.

Seems to this writer the braves gave up a ton to bring Murphy in , two starters with big league experience and the young Contreras who was an all star last season but as a DH. Murphy has three years of team control to haul before he becomes a free agent, but he does hit arbitration eligibility this year. I’m no GM but this deal left me along with a lot of Braves fans scratching their heads.
