Boston Red Sox Masataka Yoshida Named AL Player of the Week

To say Red Sox 29 year old rookie Masataka Yoshida is crushing the ball would be putting those words lightly. Last week the Red Sox 90 million dollar import raked at a rate of .480 including 2 home runs 2 doubles and drove in 8 runs across 27 plate appearances. Think that's swinging a hot bat ? Me too , oh did I mention his 16 game hitting streak ? oops

Yoshida has taken Boston and the American league by storm this year. He is batting .321 on the youer with 6 home runs 24 RBI to go along with 22 runs scored he is carrying a .403 OBP his slugging is ungodly .538 and his OPS is 939 on the season. The man has struck out 11 times. This year, 127 plate appearances and he has K’d eleven times this year. These are numbers no one not even Yoshida’s family could have hoped for as he boarded that plane for Boston. These are ROTY numbers.

Yoshida’s energy and enthusiasm has changed the culture of this locker room. Many young players on this roster have said the clubhouse is night and day compared to last year. I have to think credit is due to more than any one player. But having a player like Yoshida on the bench in the field and in the clubhouse with his attitude and love of this game has to have a huge effect on all those around him. Leadership by example is something not to be dismissed as a saying. Yoshida’s example has been infectious. Some may say playing winning baseball can do that. Well you can't play winning baseball without it.
