The Boston Red Sox released utilityman Marwin González. That was expected after Boston designated the 32-year-old for assignment last week. The Sox also officially added waiver claim Travis Shaw to the active roster and optioned outfielder Franchy Cordero and catcher Connor Wong to Triple-A Worcester.

Signed to a one-year $3 million deal over the winter, González’s tenure in Boston was a disaster. He hit a career-worst .202/.281/.285 with two home runs across 271 plate appearances. But at least he was a versatile utility man. Capable (cough, cough) of playing multiple infield and outfield spots. Enter old buddy Travis Shaw, who is batting an even worse .191/.279/.277 with six HR across 202 plate appearances. But at least Big Trav is less versatile. Being able to man both corners in the infield.

Yes, folks, I have been screaming for a first baseman. But Travis Shaw? This is Bloom’s answer to my demands? Someone needs to clean his ears or have someone read my columns to him because he just doesn’t get it. I would call this move lipstick on a pig but there’s no lipstick in this bag.
At least I don’t have to look at Franchy Cordero pretending to be a ballplayer. Honestly, I would rather see a platoon of Dalbec and Kyle Schwarber. But as it looks now, you will get a platoon of Dalbec and Shaw with Schwarber pushing JD into left or more likely right for this three-game set, and Schwarber will take over the DH Spot. So over the weekend, Bloom has made HIS Boston Red Sox less versatile, poorer defensively, with lighter hitting going into the Bronx to face the Yankees…where’s my Scotch?
