AL East weekend recap- 7/19

The Yankees and Red Sox face off for round two this month. The Rays and Orioles fight for the wild card spot.

NEW YORK YANKEES (64-28)

Jordan Montgomery pitched six innings, struck out four, and gave up three runs against the Red Sox. DJ LeMahieu went 3-for-5. Giancarlo Stanton went 2-for-5 with a home run. Matt Carpenter went 2-for-3. The Yankees lost 5-4.

Jameson Taillon pitched six innings, struck out five, and gave up one run. Aaron Judge went 3-for-3 with a walk and two home runs. Matt Carpenter went 2-for-4 with a walk and two home runs. The Yankees won 14-1.

Gerrit Cole pitched seven innings, struck out 12, and gave up two runs. Tim Locastro went 3-for-5 with a home run. Joey Gallo hit his 11th home run. LeMahieu went 3-for-4 with a walk. Aaron Hick went 2-for-4. Judge went 2-for-3. The Yanks won 13-2.

After the break, the Yankees head to Houston for a doubleheader against the Astros. 

BOSTON RED SOX (48-45)

Nathan Eovaldi returned from the IL. He pitched 4.1 innings, struck out four, and gave up three runs against the Yankees. J.D. Martinez went 2-for-5. Rafael Devers hit his 21st home run. Xander Bogaerts went 2-for-5 and Bobby Dalbec went 2-for-5. The Sox won 5-4. 

Nick Pivetta pitched 4.1 innings, struck out four, and gave up seven runs. Devers, Bogaerts and Kevin Plawecki were the only hits. The Sox lost 14-1.

Chris Sale lasted 0.2 innings and gave up three runs; two earned. He exited the game due to a fracture in his left pinky from a line drive by Hicks. The man can’t catch a break. Jeter Downs went 2-for-3 with a home run, the first of his MLB career. The Sox lost 13-2.

After the break, the Sox face the Blue Jays at home.

TAMPA BAY RAYS (51-41)

Luis Patino pitched 3.1 innings and gave up two runs against the Orioles. Harold Ramirez went 2-for-4. Josh Lowe went 2-for-4. The Rays won 5-4.

Ryan Yarbrough pitched 5.1 innings, struck out four, and gave up two runs. Brandon Lowe went 2-for-4 with a walk. Randy Aorzarena went 2-for-4 with a walk. Taylor Walls went 2-for-5. 

Corey Kluber pitched six innings, struck out three, and gave up four runs. Arozarena went 2-for-4. The Rays won 7-5. 

After the break, the Rays head to Kansas City to face the Royals. 

TORONTO BLUE JAYS (50-43)

Kevin Gausman pitched six innings, struck out six, and gave up two runs against the Royals. Matt Chapman hit his 14th home run of the season. Alejandro Kirk went 2-for-4. The Jays lost 3-1.

Alek Manoah pitched seven innings, struck out six, and gave up one run. Teoscar Hernandez went 2-for-4 with a home run. Matt Chapman went 3-for-4 with a home run. The Jays won 8-1.

Max Castillo pitched three innings, struck out one, and gave up three runs. Vladimir Guerrero Jr went 3-for-4. Lourdes Gurriel Jr went 2-for-3 with a walk. The Jays won 6-5.

Jose Berrios pitched 6.1 innings, struck out seven, and gave up 2 runs. Kirk hit his 11th home run. Chapman went 2-for-3. The Jays won 4-2. 

After the break, the Jays head to Boston to face the Red Sox.

BALTIMORE ORIOLES (46-46)

Tyler Wells pitched 5.2 innings, struck out six, and gave up three runs against the Rays. Trey Mancini went 3-for-5 with a home run. Ramon Urias went 2-for-4 with a home run. The O’s lost 5-4. 

Dean Kremer went four innings, struck out two, and gave up three runs. Ramon Urias went 2-for-4. Jorge Mateo went 2-for-4. The O’s won 6-4.

Jordan Lyles pitched 2.2 innings, struck out five, and gave up six runs. Austin Hays went 2-for-4 with a home run. Rougned Odor went 2-for-4 with a home run. The O’s lost 7-5.

After the break, the O’s head to the Bronx to face the Yankees.
