AL East week recap- 5/20

The Red Sox and Astros meet up for the first time since the ALCS last year. The Rays take on Miguel Cabrera and the Tigers. The Yankees and Orioles go head-to-head.

NEW YORK YANKEES (28-10)

Luis Severino took the mound against the Orioles for the first of four in Baltimore. He lasted six innings, struck out seven, and gave up one run. Jose Trevino went 2-for-4 with a home run. Anthony Rizzo hit his 10th home run of the season. Josh Donaldson went 3-for-4 with a home run. The Yanks won 6-2. 

Jameson Taillon pitched five innings, struck out two, and gave up three runs. Aaron Judge went 4-for-5 with two home runs. Gleyber Torres went 2-for-5. The Yanks won 5-4.

Gerrit Cole pitched seven innings, struck out five, and gave up two runs. Donaldson went 2-for-4. Rizzo went 1-for-4. The Yankees won 3-2.

Jordan Montgomery pitched five innings, struck out three, and gave up three runs. Giancarlo Stanton hit his 11th home run of the season. Rizzo went 2-for-4. DJ LeMahieu went 2-for-5. The offense tied the game at six in the 9th but Lucas Luetge gave up the game-winning home run. The Yanks lost 9-6.

The Yankees head back home to face the White Sox. Nestor Cortes, Luis Severino, and Jameson Taillon are scheduled to pitch.

BOSTON RED SOX (15-22)

The Astros came into town for three games. Garrett Whitlock pitched five innings, struck out three, and gave up two runs. Trevor Story hit his second home run of the season. J.D. Martinez continued his hitting streak and went 2-for-4. Enrique Hernandez went 2-for-4. Xander Bogaerts hit a home run that gave insurance runs for the win. The Sox won it 6-3.

This one hurts to write but I have no doubt a bounceback will happen. Nathan Eovaldi pitched in game two. He lasted only 1.2 innings, with no strikeouts, and gave up nine runs; six earned. Rafael Devers went 3-for-4 with a home run. Martinez went 3-for-5 with a home run. Alex Verdugo went 2-for-5 and Story went 2-for-4 with a walk. The Sox lost badly 13-4.

Nick Pivetta pitched a complete game. He gave up two hits and one run. Devers hit his first triple of the season. Martinez’s hitting streak was over. CHristain Vazquez went 1-for-3. The Sox won 5-1. 

The Mariners come into town for four games. Rich Hill, Garrett Whitlock, and Nathan Eovaldi are scheduled to pitch. It’s said that Michael Wacha is expected to return from the IL and start today.

TAMPA BAY RAYS (23-15)

The Rays took on the Tigers this week. Corey Kluber lasted six innings, struck out eight, and gave up two runs. Brett Phillips went 3-for-3 with a home run. Randy Arozarena went 1-for-4. The Rays lost 3-2.

Shane McClanahan pitched seven innings, struck out seven, and gave up one run. Kevin Kiermaier went 3-for-4 with a home run. Yandy Diaz went 2-for-4. Phillips and Arozarena each homered as well. The Rays won 8-1.

David Rasmussen pitched five scoreless innings and struck out seven. Isaac Paredes went 2-for-4 with two home runs. Harold Ramirez went 2-for-3. Diaz went 3-for-4. The Rays won 6-1.

After a day off, the Rays head to Baltimore to face the Orioles over the weekend. Jalen Beeks, Jeffrey Springs, and Corey Kluber are scheduled to pitch. 

TORONTO BLUE JAYS (20-18)

The Mariners were in Toronto for three games. Yusei Kikuchi pitched six scoreless innings and struck out six. Bo Bichette went 3-for-5 with a home run. Matt Chapman hit his 6th home run of the season. The Jays won 6-2.

Jose Berrios pitched seven scoreless innings and struck out four. George Springer went 1-for-4. Vladimir Guerrero Jr went 1-for-3 with a walk. The Jays won 3-0.

Kevin Gausman pitched five innings, struck out three, and gave up two runs. Santiago Espinal went 2-for-4. Teoscar Hernandez went 1-for-4. The Jays lost 5-1.

The Reds come into town for the weekend. Hyun Jin Ryu, Alek Manoah, and Yusei Kikuchi are scheduled to pitch.

BALTIMORE ORIOLES (15-24)

Kyle Bradish faced the Yankees in the first of four. He lasted 4.1 innings, struck out six, and gave up four runs. Anthony Santander went 2-for-4 with two home runs. The O’s lost 6-2.

Spenser Watkins pitched four innings, struck out one, and gave up two runs. Ramon Urias hit his second home run of the season. Tyler Nevin went 2-for-3. Trey Mancini went 2-for-4. The O’s threatened in the 9th but fell short. They lost 5-4.

Jordan Lyles pitched seven innings, struck out eight, and gave up three runs; two earned. AUstin Hays went 3-for-4. Cedric Mullins went 1-for-4. The O’s lost 3-2.

Bruce Zimmermann pitched five innings, struck out two, and gave up five runs. Anthony Santander went 3-for-5 with a home run that won the game. Tyler Nevin went 2-for-4. The O’s won it in walk-off fashion 9-6.

The Rays come into town over the weekend. Tyler Wells, Kyle Bradish, and Spenser Watkins are scheduled to start. 

OUTSIDE THE AL EAST

The Mets announced that Max Scherzer has an oblique strain. He is expected to be out 6-8 weeks.
